Abstract

This present article on videogames –software works of great complexity where different disciplines such as art, narrative, design and engineering participate – reviews the main milestones in the history of videogames and analyses the cultural meaning of an industry that is presently generating sales that are larger than those of other sectors of entertainment, such as film and music. It then delves into the creation of videogames in Chile, which now has 33 firms with sales for over 13 million dollars a year, and describes aspects of these firms, as well as the process of creation of a videogame. Finally, it presents the fundamentals that led to the creation of the major in Engineering in Videogame Development and Virtual Reality at Universidad de Talca, initiative that seeks to provide Chile with skilled human capital.
