Abstract

Currently, many dressings with healing properties are in the market. However, their high cost makes them difficult to attain. On the other hand there is information regarding the application of natural products such as honey for wound treatments. This article presents a literature review conducted with the aim of determining whether there is sufficient evidence to support the use of honey in the treatment of chronic wounds, and therefore its use with people who require effective treatment that is easier to access. The revised articles were full text, extracted from scientific databases and less than five years old. The results highlight the improvement in all kinds of wounds, given the diverse properties in honey Among these, the following are mentioned: antimicrobial action, autolitic debridement, deodorant action, and anti-inflammatory activity. It is recommended that liquid honey be used with sterile dressings, that cavities be impregnated with a syringe, or the use of commercial honey dressings. According to the evidence, honey is effective and has multiple benefits at a lower cost.
