Abstract

At the International Conference of Primary Health Care (Alma Ata, 1978), community participation was defined as the process through which individuals and their families attain the responsibility of their own and collective health and well being improving their own economic and communal development. As a way to answer to this call, was developed a model for care based on self-care at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, since the early's 1980, that strength Nursing. This article describes this experience from a context analysis, their strengthens as an integrative innovative model of the clinic and academia, and the strategies to implement it. Also is mentioned some weakness related to the maintenance as a component of medical ambulatory centers.
