Abstract

From a linear and static perspective, the increase in displacements of a structure due to the implementation of a green roof could be counteracted by increasing the stiffness of the structure. This article proposes the use of the differential evolution algorithm to optimize the equivalent stiffness of a one- and two-story-high structure by varying the green roof load under the equivalent horizontal force analysis in the Bogotá city. Through the MATLAB software, the optimization algorithm and the matrix analysis method of frame three-dimensional structures subject to compliance with the maximum drift proposed by the Colombian construction regulations are programmed and coupled. A maximum increase in equivalent stiffness of 19.25% and 57.80% (one-story structures), and of 11.12% and 32.97% (two-story structures) for green roof weights of 100 kg/m2 and 300 kg/m2 respectively, is necessary to meet regulatory requirements. It is expected that this research will serve as a starting point to generate constructive solutions for the implementation of green roofs in one- and two-story structures in the
