Abstract

This special issue of Diseña seeks to articulate and describe interdisciplinary examples of design-led research, posing questions such as: in what ways are such projects addressing matters of concern, what are the defining traits of such projects, and what has design brought that other disciplines could not? What legitimates the designer as a leader? What authority, expertise, or qualifications must a designer possess to lead? What is the tradeoff between a specific ability to form knowledge and an ability to assemble discrete pieces into a unified whole? What are the design methods or strategies used in research? And, are these methods succinctly defined at the commencing of a project or developed as the research unfolds?

Stan Ruecker, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

BA in English and BS c in Computer Science, University of Regina. MA in English, University of Toronto. MD es in Visual Communication Design, University of Alberta. PhD in English and Art & Design with a specialization in Humanities Computing, University of Alberta. He is Anthony J. Petullo Professor in Graphic Design in the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. His research is in the areas of experience design, design theory, design for health, and digital humanities. Some of his most recent publications include: ‘Activating Interpretation: Experience Design in the Humanities’ (with J. Roberts-Smith, in Making Humanities Matter, University of Minnesota Press, 2018) and ‘Four Criteria for Design Theories’ (with P. Hodges, C. Scaletsky, J. Rivera, R. Faller, and A. Geppert, She Ji, Vol. 3, N° 1).
