Abstract
In the face of politically violent settings, how art and visuality undertake a distinctive relationship with the importance of history arises as a natural question. This article directs our attention to the texts written by the Chilean-German critic Ronald Kay in Chile in the 70s and 80s, particularly those which insistently examine the relationship among image, history, and memory. Taking the attachment held by the critic to the work of Eugenio Dittborn as a starting point, we have focused our attention on the Pietà to reflect upon the idea of an image, which, amidst sorrowful times and taking its frailty into consideration, represents loving and warm protection. Namely, it is about undertaking the question of the power of an image of art to keep what is lost, as long as it is lost, in safety.
