Challenges for an Art Theory: Aesthetic Experience, Institution and Social Functions
Main Article Content
Abstract
Considering certain polemics that surrounded the avant-garde on the xx century, the following essay will try to reinterpret Art Theory from two points of view: on the one hand, its explicative function, and on the other, the problematic relationship between art and society. These views must be revised in order to surpass the dichotomy of artistic purity and its commitment. This essay proposes an approximation to this dual problematic. At the first, it will try to reinterpret the problems of the Art Theory following a few discussions from the late twentieth century. Then, the paper will delimit two fundamental variables, which must be taken into account to understand its comprehensive function. Finally, it will come to an understanding about a sort of relationship between art and society that could be able to escape the dichotomy of purity and commitment previously mentioned.
