Abstract

The purpose of this work is to verify that the principal characteristic of the national fine arts historical development was the abandonment of theoretical support. Criticism, carried out between the end of last century and the beginning of the present century, inserts mainly within the named artistic chronicle, in general, lacking of conceptual rigorousness. Concerning this reason, contributions made by Ricardo Richon-Brunet, Juan Francisco González and Juan Emar are examined, as well as the critical work of the principal movements, such as the Trece painters' generation, the Grupo de los Diez and the Grupo Montparnasse. Finally, it is also examined the work of Antonio Romera, who carried out a foundational proposal for the national fine arts history, criticizing, for the first time, with an objectivity of judgement and theoretical bases.
