Abstract

This article analyzes urban inequality in the Metropolitan Area of the Valley of Mexico (ZMVM), emphasizing the historical process that formed the municipality of Nezahualcóyotl -one of the municipalities with the highest population density in the federation, which has led the first places with the highest number of infections and deaths from coronavirus in the country – as well as the role of municipal public markets, to identify the vulnerability aspects of the popular supply system. From the discourse derived from the health contingency due to COVID-19, the discredit arising from the health inefficiencies of the markets stands out, indicated as areas of high risk of contagion, which have favored the economic development of other oligopolistic commercial formats, which exacerbate the already a food security crisis for the most vulnerable population in the municipality. At the same time, it represents the great opportunity for change, if the leading role of these facilities is assumed in the recovery processes after the pandemic.
