TWO WAYS TO RECOVER ORALITY IN CHILEAN FICTION

Abstract

The present article shows how Chilean writers have incorporated the Chilean variety of Spanish into their narrative texts. Two ways to integrate the oral dimension in the novel are described: one that consists of a almost literal transcription of the characters’ utterances, whereas tha author’s discourse flows autonomously. Examples of this are the novels Don Guillermo (1860), by J. V. Lastarria, and Zurzulita (1920), by Mariano Latorre. The second way consists of fan evocation, by means of the author’s own discourse, of the characters’ utterances, such in the novel Alsino, by Pedro Prado (1920).
