This paper examines, from a historical and critical point of view, the polymorphic prose of the Chilean poet, novelist, short story and chronicle writer Rosamel del Valle (1901-1965). The methodology embraces a broad perspective of Hispanic American theories on literary modernity in order to emphasize the importance of del Valle’s literary contribution in the evolution of the Vanguardia period, from the author’s first publications in the late 1920s to its peculiar style in the early1960s . The most remarkable characteristics of the style and structure in his eight prose books, both fiction and chronicles —published both during the author’s life and posthumously— are discussed. This aspect of del Valle’s contribution has remained largely unknown and unrecognized until now.
