Identification of national allegories in four essays by Chilean authors
Abstract
In Alberto Edwards Vives' La fronda aristocrática (1928), I identify the following four allegories: historical contrition, voluntary metaphysics, a magisterial allegory and a biograpical allegory. In his essay Chile o una loca geografía (1940), Benjamín Subercaseaux sets in play the allegory of the discovery of national origins and the allegory ofa redeeming ethnography. In Diario íntimo (edited and published in 1990 and 1995) Luis Oyarzún gives an account of events recorded between 1952 and 1972, centering his essay around the magisterial, the Christian and the itinerant allegories. Marco Antonio de la Parra 's La mala memoria (1997) elaborates the metaironic and biographical allegories.
