Abstract

Based on the analysis o/7827 intonational units extracted from a representative sample ofValdivian Spanish in an interview situation, this paper presents an inventory of the most frequently used and statistically contrastive intonational units. The analysis identijies sequential units within a sentence unit and associates them to their modal function ( conclusiveness, inconclusiveness, asking far information, expressing one's feelings, orders, and greetings), their grammatical function (word, phrase, clause, or sentence boundary), and their communicative-expressive function (assurance, deemphasis, assertiveness, familiarity, suspense, inconclusiveness, restrained inconclusiveness, finality, reference, emphasis, restrained emphasis.
