Abstract

This paper presents a pragmatic, interactive approach to analyze speech production in blind children. Lev S. Vigotsky’s theory of social development of cognition is reviewed, along with the theory of speech acts, from a linguistic perspective. The emphasis is centered on the difficulties met by blind children in acquiring language, especially the late emergence of first words (a delay of 8 to 36 months, compared to non-blind children
