Abstract

In this paper, the author compares two forms of Mapuche discourse, represented by religious texts –‘wewpin’– and narrative texts –‘ngütram’–. The most recurrent speech acts, according to Searle, are analyzed. The results show that each type of discourse favors a specific type af speech act: wewpin discourse prefers directive acts while ngütram favors representative ones. This is due to the pragmatic function that each type of discourse has in the conformation and preservation of the Mapuche cultural identity.)
