Abstract

The notion of “zero sign” is both functionally and semantically valid in those cases where an absence (a silence) systematically contrasts with a presence in a given context. Rabanales (1966) has posited the existence in Spanish of a recurrent “zero preposition” in the direct object, when the preposition “a” contrasts with an absence of a preposition. This paper offers cases and analyses that corroborate his position.
