Abstract

The present article synthesizes the crucial aspects of the use of memory as a criterion for defining personal identity. In first place, Locke's view of identity is sketched, including his definition of person, the participation of consciousness in hís doctrine and the way in which it relates to memory. Futhermore, Reid 's c1itic is examined, which basically includes the fundamental elements in terms of which the objection to the Lockean pro posa! is structured, and through its behalf, to ali those doctrines that in one way or another assess memory as a necessary and / or sufficcient criterion for personal identity
