El Cautiverio felis [sic], play directed by Francisco Sánchez and performed by “Tryo Teatro Banda” reconstructs the life of creole soldier Francisco Núñez de Pineda y Bascuñán, who spent several months captured by mapuche indians and told his experience in a work he finished in 1673. This article analizes the process of cultural resignification implied in the adaptation of a colonial work to a contemporary play, focusing on production and reception contexts, as well as the ways in which both works underpin different ideas of identity and belonging toward mapuche people.
