DEMOGRAPHY AND SOCIO-ECONOMIC BACKGROUND OF ARICA BETWEEN THE YEARS 1824 AND 1879

Abstract

After providing some background on Arica in the colonial period, the authors analyze the demographic development of the city from the War of Independence (1824) to the beginning of the Pacific War (1879). Demographic data from travelers and censuses are collected, and the causes of population decline (malaria, emigration, wars, etc.) are examined. The ethnic, occupational, educational and religious composition of the population, as expressed in the 1876 census, is analyzed in detail. It is concluded by pointing out the importance of the tertiary factor (commerce, transport and communications) in that Census, thus confirming the importance of Arica as a transit center. Agriculture and fishing are much less significant in the city's economy.
