Abstract

There are three Chinese translations for Chronical of a Death Foretold, a novella by Gabriel García Márquez. The first one is in simple Chinese, which can be traced back to 1981. The other two were recently published, in 2013 and 2019, respectively. The former is in simple Chinese and the latter in traditional Chinese. In general, this study is set out to discuss the three aforementioned Chinese translations. More specifically, it is to verify the hypothesis on the retranslation of source text, analyze the translation strategies of the three target texts and compare the different promotion mechanisms of China and Taiwan. By both quantitative and qualitative methods, it examines the theoretical framework of retranslation and explore and compare the tree target texts from objective and comprehensive perspectives.
